Montreux and Freddy Mercury was a kind of love story.
He came to the Swiss Riviera in 1978 for the first time. One of the main reason was of course for the calm and beauty of the region. But also because of the famous Mountain studio which was at
that time, one of the best in the world.
Freddy Mercury was so impressed by the work of David Richards (sound engineer of the studio) that he bought the studio and hired David as his producer and sound engineer.
Freddy mercury and Queen recorded many tracks in Montreux including the famous "Made in heaven"
just before to pass away in London a few days later.
A couple of years after, a statue was placed on the lakeside, in front of the market place. This is now a monument of the city to "visit"where you will always find some flowers that fans
place to honor his memory.
Since a couple of years, a Freddy Memorial Day takes place in the city in September.

I discovered the death of Michael Jackson this morning on internet and a couple of hours
later, it was (or it is) the major breaking news on all medias. I guess we will often hear these songs (great by the way) for the next days.
However did you know that Michael Jackson spent 2 weeks in Montreux in 1999 ? He stayed in the suite tower of the Montreux Palace
He came to Montreux to record the song "Blood on the dancefloor" at the mountain studio (where Queen also recorded some CD's). Unfortunately the studio, which was located in the
casino of Montreux does not exist anymore. There is now a discotheque.
He seemed to enjoy the tranquilitiy of the city and I just read on a web site that he wanted to buy the "Manoir de Ban" (House of Charlie Chaplin), however it was refused.
Michael Jackson did several concerts in Switzerland however according to the information that I have, never in Montreux.

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977),
better known as Charlie Chaplin, was an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and English comedic actor. Chaplin became one of the most famous actors as well as a notable filmmaker, composer and
musician in the early to mid "Classical Hollywood" era of the American cinema.
In 1953, the Charlie Chaplin settled with their children in Corsier (just above Vevey), at the Manoir de Ban, a beautiful property surrounded by century-old trees. The children went to the local
state school, and the local cinema showed their father’s films, much to their amusement.
Every year, Sir Charles and Lady Oona Chaplin used to go to the National Circus Knie when it stopped at Vevey; they were much loved by the community.
By 1977, he died in his sleep in Vevey. He was interred in Corsier-Sur-Vevey
Cemetery.
Within 2 years a Charlie Chaplin museum should open (if the Chaplin family gets all autorizations) at the Manoir de Ban in Corsier where
he lived. By that time, go to Vevey and have a look to his status which is on the lake shores.

In 1971, the casino of Montreux where the Jazz festival used to take place completly burnt during the concert of Franck Zappa. Deep Purple, the famous British hard rock band who were
enjoying time on their balcony at the Eden Palace, composed this famous song referring to the smoke on Lake Geneva.
